CAW Women at UNCSW57

The fifty-seventh session of the Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW57) will take place at United Nations Headquarters in New York from March 4th to 15th, 2013, and once again sisters from the CAW will join with other union women from around the world as part of a delegation of trade union leaders and activists.

This year's UNCSW57 will focus on the elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls; and in keeping with that theme, the trade union delegation will call on all member states to take all necessary measures to immediately take action to prevent and remedy violence against women and girls.

And for the first time ever - under the leadership of sister Julie White, Director of the CAW Women's Department - the CAW has been invited by the International Labour Organization (ILO) to participate on a panel at one the side events. This side event, titled The Impact of Domestic Violence in the Workplace, will be an opportunity for the CAW to showcase our truly progressive, innovative and highly respected Women's Advocate Program - a program that has seen the creation of over 260 workplace leadership positions to help women in our union access community and workplace supports when facing violence in their lives.

Sister White will share with women leaders and activists from all around the world our experiences, our challenges, our bargaining strategies and our successes. This promises to be a very proud moment for our union - a moment that without the courage, determination and commitment of the hundreds of CAW Women’ Advocates would not have been possible.
